What Is Kratom?
Kratom is a large tree originating from Southeast Asia. Historically, its leaves are used as a stimulant by farmers. All-time people used it to treat hypertension, cough, and many other diseases.
Fresh leaf of this tree is chewed by workers to achieve a stimulating effect and diminish fatigue. Dried leaves are usually brewed as a hot tea, also it can be used as a powder or extracted with water, which is then evaporated into a resin that fits for consumption.
Those who use Kratom as an organic antidepressant attribute to it stimulating, energizing properties.
Kratom also contains:
- alkaloids, which are hard immunomodulators and reduce blood pressure
- epicatechin - a powerful antioxidant that dark chocolate generally contains and closely related to EGCG, which gives green tea its beneficial properties.

Almost everywhere in USA Kratom is authorized for sale and consumption. Each state has its relation to Kratom’s usage. There are states where Kratom is completely banned without exceptions. In some states, Kratom is illegal just in some cities. There are also states where the legality of Kratom is partial or its legality is under consideration and the status of Kratom may be changed at any time. Is Kratom Legal in My Country?
In many countries, Kratom is treated differently.
Canada
Kratom is located in the so-called “gray area” here - it can be freely sold and bought throughout the country, but it is not authorized by the Canadian Ministry of Health as a natural health product.
European Union
In EU countries, Kratom is licensed as a raw material in the cosmetics industry. It is also well known as a natural painkiller and as a natural substitution therapy for drugs and alcohol dependence. But each country in the EU can have its law about Kratom’s usage.
France
Since January, 7th 2020 French agency of medicines banned Kratom as psychotropic substances. Article R5132-88 of the French Public Health code prohibits the possession, production, exports, imports, propose and use of any substances included in the psychotropic drugs list, in which Kratom is now included.
Germany
Kratom is fully legal. But it should be labeled and sold not for human consumption.
Holland
This country is well known for its attitude to different drugs. So the Netherlands is rightfully considered the largest vendor of Kratom in Europe. Everyone can sell, buy and consume power and pills 100% legally.
Portugal
In the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Legislation, Kratom refers to new psychoactive drugs, according to Resolution 154/2013. Usage and storing are not forbidden, but the sellers of Kratom may get penalties.
United Kingdom
The UK has the Psychoactive Substances Act (Act from March 2016). And there is no mention of Kratom. So it is valid for simple possession and possession with intent to supply. But the production, selling, importation, and exportation are prohibited.
Czech Republic
Czech Republic ranks first among the most open-minded countries in the EU. Kratom is 100% legal here according to the Government Regulation 463/2013 Coll. and subsequent updates on the lists of addictive substances. Moreover, there are many shops sells kratom all around the republic.
CIS
The authorities of Belarus and Russia banned the mitragynine, which Kratom leaves contain. All other countries of the former CIS permit Kratom in any form.
Thailand, Burma, and Malaysia
Also, Kratom is prohibited in Thailand, Burma, and Malaysia. In same Malaysia, consumption of Kratom is more like an old tradition. It's a quaint custom began when people stimulated physical activity with the help of kratom and noted that it helps to bear hard and monotonous work easier.
Australia
In 2005, the Australian Drug and Poisons Schedule Committee completely prohibited Kratom for purchase, sale, and storing. Though kratom is allowed for research purposes.

Denmark and Finland have questionable legality. You can get Kratom, like other medications, only with a doctor’s prescription.
The Legal Climate of Kratom
Kratom causes division because of the psychoactive alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine, which is 10 times more strong than morphine. In this way, it is so important not to exceed the admissible limit value.
Even though Kratom is banned for use in Thailand, the country of origin, many scholars challenge this ban. The decision to ban Kratom was more likely to be corrupted, which lead to raise up its street value. P. Sapcharoen, head of the National Institute of Thai Traditional Medicine, which is located in Bangkok, made a conclusion about Kratom “can be advised for relieving opiate dependence and for patients suffering from depression." And the International Institute of Thai Drug Control gave a report about “Kratom is an integral part of Southern Thai culture” and, besides, “The ban on Kratom is unnecessary and unproductive in this decade.”
